Transition Gathering

A transition camp

The first Transition Camp Gathering took place last weekend on what some called the second weekend of summer this year. Taking place in the beautiful Sussex countryside on the organic Wapsbourne Manor Farm that has recently branched out into camping, the aim was to make it both affordable and family friendly. The lack of many kids in most of the photos is evidence that they were off and away having fun leaving parents time to be with the group.
Porridge!
After setting up camp, the Friday evening was spent round the fire with songs and tales. The next morning after some delicious warming porridge made by the host farmer Paul Cragg, his daughter Food For FreeAlice Cragg took us off on a shrooming expedition to find mushrooms in the woods around.

Following a leisurely lunch, a debate on Community Supported Agriculture took place around the fire circle that looked at a number of different models that this encompasses, a debate with added interest for Paul who has himself already been investigating CSA for the farm there. While this was going on others were engaged in a The First Transition Camp Gatheringwillow weaving workshop with some creative hats being produced by some of the children!

As the moon rose in the sky in the clear night sky, we were able to break away from the many songs around the fire and be treated to close up views of the moon and stars that many had not seen in such detail before through a substantial telescope. Later the Yurt Saunayurt sauna proved popular before bed with many thanks to Stuart though with the night so magical it was tempting to be drawn back into the late night camp fire circle!
Evening Fireside Circle

World Peace Day on Sunday was celebrated with a peace dance led by Karmit accompanied by beautiful singing from Flora who also took us through a dance for life from Ghana followed by groups spreading out around the field for Tai Chi lessons. As well as time to just unwind and enjoy mulling over transition ideas together, there was much time spent over the weekend networking with some good cross initiative contacts being made. Campers came from places that include Barnet, Brighton, Brixton, Forest Row, Hastings, Kingston, Lewes, London, Maidenhead, Sherborne, West Hoathly, Whitstable.

The First Transition Camp Gathering
In the future, tales will no doubt be told of those who were there this year and the warm sunny days spent together. All agreed that this was an event to repeat next year and we look forward to many more Transitioners joining us then.

The event would not have been possible without the support of many people not least my wife Annie who stepped in at the last moment to make all the delicious food but also the generous donation of the camping space to us by Paul and for the support of his family in filling in the logistical gaps so smoothly. So in the meantime if you want to go camping then check out Wapsbourne Manor Farm!
